Machine learning techniques enhance AI firewalls for network security. Artificially intelligent firewalls get better at stopping computer attacks and hackers over time.

Artificial intelligence applications are uniquely suited for the ever-changing, ever-evolving world of network security. Typical firewalls are only as good as the information provided by the Network Administrator. A new type of attack creates vulnerabilities, which a static firewall does not have the ability to avoid without human direction. An AI-managed firewall service, however, can protect a computer network from known and future threats.

Network Security Solutions Using AI

Network security solutions are often very expensive, and must be frequently upgraded in order to keep up with changes in intrusive techniques and technologies. An artificially intelligent firewall is constantly upgrading its knowledge base in response to events, and increasing its protective abilities, which may forestall the need for constant updates. Using artificial intelligence applications to enhance network security solutions requires both initial training and experience for the firewall.

AI Managed Firewall Service

AI managed firewall services use machine learning techniques to allow the firewall to evolve with changes in network traffic. Initially, a firewall that is powered with artificial intelligence must be "trained". The training session consists of educating the program on known risks and current settings, as well as network-specific traffic and data locations.

Network Administrator Firewall Training

Once the firewall has its basic information framework in place, it begins to add to the knowledge base with each network access attempt. During the learning phases, an AI firewall should be used in conjunction with another type of network protection if possible. It is important for the Network Administrator to be closely involved with the training process, by providing additional information to the firewall program as needed.

Network Penetration Testing

Network penetration testing is often a part of the training process for an artificially intelligent firewall. Using a computer outside of the network to initiate common types of network attacks lets the Network Administrator demonstrate the correct responses to the firewall program. Learning appropriate responses to common types of network intrusion attempts before they occur in real-time prevents damage that might occur during a genuine attack.

AI to Secure Network Access

A firewall is necessary in order to limit network access to only authorized applications and access requests, while allowing legitimate information requests. Without protection, a network is vulnerable to the outside world, and may be accessed by hackers or computer programs. Using artificial intelligence to improve the performance of a firewall ensures that the protection provided by the firewall improves over time, in reaction to changes in threats and attacks.

According to "Firewall Auditing Tools," a 2009 article published by Kurt Marko in Processor, Techs & Trends, the use of an AI program also improves quality of monitoring and reduces the amount of time required for network professionals in the area of network security, due to its ability to self-regulate and self-update.
